Summary from
Goodreads:
Charlie Hanson
has a clear vision of his future. A senior at Brighton School of
Mathematics and Science, he knows he’ll graduate, go to MIT, and
inevitably discover solutions to the universe’s greatest unanswered
questions. He’s that smart. But Charlie’s future blurs the moment
he reaches out to touch the tattoo on a beautiful girl’s
neck.
The future has never seemed very kind to Charlotte Finch, so she’s counting on the present. She’s not impressed by the strange boy at the donut shop—until she learns he’s a student at Brighton where her sister has just taken a job as the English teacher. With her encouragement, Charlie orchestrates the most effective prank campaign in Brighton history. But, in doing so, he puts his own future in jeopardy.
By the time he learns she's ill—and that the pranks were a way to distract Ms. Finch from Charlotte’s illness—Charlotte’s gravitational pull is too great to overcome. Soon he must choose between the familiar formulas he’s always relied on or the girl he’s falling for (at far more than 32 feet per second squared).

REVIEW
I received a copy via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I really don't know how to begin this review, I just finished reading Love and Other Unknown Variables and my feelings are still all over the place. I've been putting off reading this book because I know it's going to be an emotional read and I was right. I read it yesterday morning because the release tour will be today and I know that Rock Chick Fairy is going to kill me if I wont review this on time. LOL! Kidding aside, it's one of the most emotional books I've read this year.
Charlie is a geek and has been experimenting over the years on why geeks aren't really as cool as what pop culture suggests. Despite his failure to get a girlfriend using the scientific method, he still knows that he's genius can bring him to MIT as soon as he graduates high school. While waiting in line at Krispy Kreme, he saw something that will eventually change his views about life, love and logic.
“There are some things in life that cannot be explained withlogic. They cannot be understood through dissection. They arewhat they are—good, bad, or epically crappy. Sometimes theyare all those things at once.”
Charlotte has been ill for the last seven years and she's "sick of being sick." She have an overprotective sister, a depressed dad and everyone seems to look at her with pity. She's tired of it all and she want to take control and live her life the way she wants to. Then she met Becca Hanson who later became her best friend and Charlie, the guy who would later love her despite her illness.
My friends know how much I love tearjerkers, that's why I was assigned to review this book and this definitely falls under that category. A lot of reviews I've read compares this book to TFIOS, I have to admit they are right but Love and Other Unknown Variables have a special quality in it that makes it a great novel on its own. It's an honest book about death and dying. From the beginning, you would feel that Charlotte's condition is terminal and that there are no miracle cure. It was pretty obvious that you're heart is going to bleed at the end of the book but you're going to read it anyway because it was a beautiful journey of love, friendship and life.
“Love is an awfully big word. Even bigger than cancer.”She nods. “And there’s no cure for it either.”
I liked almost all of the characters in this book. Charlie and Charlotte are both quirky characters and they somehow fit. I loved Charlie's friends - Greta the bossy best friend and James, the big yet softy guy who happens to be Greta's boyfriend. Becca, Charlie's sister is a loner but later opened up when Charlotte came along. Ms. Finch, the English teacher who is also Charlotte's sister who was so brave to put up with a bunch of mischievous high school seniors. Even the old lady, Mrs. Dunwitty and her roses the Harvest Moon has imparted a significant lesson in the story. The only character I didn't like was Charlotte's dad.
“Sometimes life is like that, you know. It smacks us when we’re down. The brave get back up. At least, they do in the books.”
I really enjoyed reading Love and Other Unknown Variables. If you're a fan of A Walk To Remember by Nicholas Sparks or The Fault In Our Stars by John Green, this book is a must read for you.
My Rating: 4.5 Fairy Wings!!!
