BLOG TOUR: A Torch Against the Night by Sabaa Tahir

Title: A Torch Against the Night
Author: Sabaa Tahir
Series: An Ember in the Ashes #2
Published August 30th 2016 by Razorbill
ISBN: 1101998873 (ISBN13: 9781101998878)

Synopsis:

Elias and Laia are running for their lives. After the events of the Fourth Trial, Martial soldiers hunt the two fugitives as they flee the city of Serra and undertake a perilous journey through the heart of the Empire.

Laia is determined to break into Kauf—the Empire’s most secure and dangerous prison—to save her brother, who is the key to the Scholars’ survival. And Elias is determined to help Laia succeed, even if it means giving up his last chance at freedom.

But dark forces, human and otherworldly, work against Laia and Elias. The pair must fight every step of the way to outsmart their enemies: the bloodthirsty Emperor Marcus, the merciless Commandant, the sadistic Warden of Kauf, and, most heartbreaking of all, Helene—Elias’s former friend and the Empire’s newest Blood Shrike.

Bound to Marcus’s will, Helene faces a torturous mission of her own—one that might destroy her: find the traitor Elias Veturius and the Scholar slave who helped him escape…and kill them both.

Review:

“But you... are no swift-burning spark. You are a torch against the night — if you dare to let yourself burn.”

After reading A Torch Against the Night, I am inclined to believe that Sabaa Tahir knows no chill, because holy freaking wow! I was on the edge of my seat pretty much from the beginning until the end despite the slow pacing in some parts and even after the book ended, it was still pretty difficult to wrap my head around the fact that all of that happened in just one book. I couldn't even fangirl after THAT happened in the end. I was left completely speechless. Just, holy wow.

Paper Towns by John Green: A book review by Poppy Fairy

Title: Paper Towns
Author: John Green
Release date: September 22nd 2009
Released by: Speak
ISBN: 9780142414934
Rating: 4.5/5 fairy wings

Synopsis:

Who is the real Margo?

Quentin Jacobsen has spent a lifetime loving the magnificently adventurous Margo Roth Spiegelman from afar. So when she cracks open a window and climbs into his life—dressed like a ninja and summoning him for an ingenious campaign of revenge—he follows. After their all-nighter ends, and a new day breaks, Q arrives at school to discover that Margo, always an enigma, has now become a mystery. But Q soon learns that there are clues—and they're for him. Urged down a disconnected path, the closer he gets, the less Q sees the girl he thought he knew...

Review:

Paper Towns is quite possibly my most favourite out of the four JG books I’ve read (this, Looking for Alaska, Abundance of Katherines, and Will Grayson, Will Grayson). What I ultimately loved about Paper Towns, however, is that this isn’t your typical YA novel that I’ve always thought it was. This actually closely resembles Looking for Alaska in ways that the female protagonist is a huge influence to the main protagonist. That said, Paper Towns isn’t a love story, but a story about Quentin Jacobsen’s journey to self-discovery.

BOOK REVIEW: THE REST OF US JUST LIVE HERE BY PATRICK NESS

TITLE: The Rest of Us Just Live Here
AUTHOR: Patrick Ness
RELEAOctober 20, 2015
SE DATE:
RELEASED BY: HarperTeen
PURCHASE: Amazon

SUMMARY:

What if you aren’t the Chosen One?

The one who’s supposed to fight the zombies, or the soul-eating ghosts, or whatever the heck this new thing is, with the blue lights and the death?

What if you’re like Mikey? Who just wants to graduate and go to prom and maybe finally work up the courage to ask Henna out before someone goes and blows up the high school. Again.

Because sometimes there are problems bigger than this week’s end of the world, and sometimes you just have to find the extraordinary in your ordinary life.

Even if your best friend is worshipped by mountain lions.

Award-winning writer Patrick Ness’s bold and irreverent novel powerfully reminds us that there are many different types of remarkable.

EMMA AND THE BANDERWIGH by MATTHEW COX: An ARC Review by Rock Chick Fairy

Are you looking for a book this Halloween season?

Grab this book!!!
It's not only scary.. It's also imaginative and filled with adventure!

Ten-year-old Emma doesn't believe in faerie tales or monsters that secret children away in the night--until she meets one.

She lives in a quiet village at the edge of Widowswood with her parents, her Nan, and her little brother, Tam. Ready to abandon the whimsy of childhood, she finds the boredom of chores comforting and Nan's fanciful bedtime stories silly.

One morning, a wan and weary older girl staggers out of the woods and sets the entire town aflutter with whispers of a child-stealing monster lurking in the forest. Nan tells her of the Banderwigh: a dark soul who feeds on sorrow and drains the life from children's tears.

Darkness comes calling on Emma's happy home, threatening the reality to which she desperately clings. The impossible becomes more and more real, forcing Emma to reach inside herself for the ability to believe. Her family depends on it.

The monster showed up after midnight. As they do.

But it isn't the monster Conor's been expecting. He's been expecting the one from his nightmare, the one he's had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments, the one with the darkness and the wind and the screaming...

This monster is something different, though. Something ancient, something wild. And it wants the most dangerous thing of all from Conor.

It wants the truth.

MINI-REVIEWS #1: Carry On by Rainbow Rowell + The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky

Hey all! Poppy Fairy here! I've been reading a lot of books lately but I can't seem to write full book reviews about them. They always fall way shorter than my typical reviews and since there's no more brain farts to be produced, I thought I should finally give up and make them mini-reviews instead, lol.

Title: Carry on
Author: Rainbow Rowell
Purchase on: Amazon

Summary:

Simon Snow is the worst chosen one who’s ever been chosen.

That’s what his roommate, Baz, says. And Baz might be evil and a vampire and a complete git, but he’s probably right.

Half the time, Simon can’t even make his wand work, and the other half, he sets something on fire. His mentor’s avoiding him, his girlfriend broke up with him, and there’s a magic-eating monster running around wearing Simon’s face. Baz would be having a field day with all this, if he were here—it’s their last year at the Watford School of Magicks, and Simon’s infuriating nemesis didn’t even bother to show up.

Carry On is a ghost story, a love story, a mystery and a melodrama. It has just as much kissing and talking as you’d expect from a Rainbow Rowell story—but far, far more monsters.

ARCHON'S QUEEN by MATTHEW COX: A Rock Chick Fairy book review

Hi y'all! I am so happy to present yet another book by MATTHEW COX!!!
Archon's Queen is a sequel to his previous book, Prophet of the Badlands. Read on to see just how much I enjoyed this book!

~Rock Chick Fairy

Secrets, guilt, and shame―Annabelle Morgan has them all in droves. Fortunately, only one can kill her.

Anna’s gift, psionic control over electricity, tends to go haywire in moments of high emotion. One such episode leaves her homeless after her father’s “accidental” death. She ekes out a modest life as a thief and freelance enforcer until a close call with a murderous government agency makes her turn to Zoom―a powerful hallucinogenic street drug that numbs her mind so the monster cannot get out.

Her safety blanket becomes a devouring pit.

In 2413 London, Anna lives in the gutter, unable to even keep work as an exotic dancer and prostitute. After ignoring her only friend’s pleas for years, it takes a pimp telling her she is too addicted to be useful to realize just how lost she is.

When a young addition to her circle of vagrants attaches to her, Anna attempts to turn away from Zoom. A job from her old handler ends on shaky ground, but introduces her to Doctor James Mardling, a university professor looking for people just like her. He offers the one thing she has always longed for: dignity.

His price, however, may just be too much to pay.

I only have one coping mechanism: a tube around my arm and a needle in my vein.

SPARK by ERIN NOELLE: A Rock Chick Fairy book review

I’m failing.
My younger brother is getting worse, and my job - my duty - is to help him at all costs. We’ve tried everything modern medicine has to offer and nothing works.
Nothing.
Deciding to turn to unconventional treatments, we end up at Fire-on-the-Mountain, a holistic resort deep in the Rockies.
In our search for medical marijuana, I find beautiful, free-spirited Hudson Shavell - a girl who may not only hold the key to heal my brother, but to fix me as well. Even though I can’t afford distractions right now, she’s all I can think about. All that I want.

It’s funny how everything can change with one little SPARK.
