Synopsis:

I didn't ask for any of this. I didn't ask to be some kind of hero.

But when your whole life gets swept up by a tornado - taking you with it - you have no choice but to go along, you know?

Sure, I've read the books. I've seen the movies. I know the song about the rainbow and the happy little bluebirds. But I never expected Oz to look like this. To be a place where Good Witches can't be trusted, Wicked Witches may just be the good guys, and winged monkeys can be executed for acts of rebellion. There's still a yellow brick road - but even that's crumbling.

What happened? Dorothy.

They say she found a way to come back to Oz. They say she seized power and the power went to her head. And now no one is safe.

My name is Amy Gumm - and I'm the other girl from Kansas.

I've been recruited by the Revolutionary Order of the Wicked.

I've been trained to fight.

And I have a mission.

Review:

Dorothy Must Die is basically a sequel-fanfiction of The Wizard of Oz with OCs for protagonists. There's honestly nothing wrong with that, but I am not a fan. It sucks because I liked the original protagonists a lot better and I was rooting for them as the antagonists throughout the story and even though I thought they were plenty annoying, I still found the new characters to be more intolerable.

I couldn't find it within me to cheer for Amy because she's a horribly uninteresting character. Yes, she is headstrong and impulsive and she tries to do what's right and has a smart mouth; traits that I often look for in female MCs, but in the sea of YA protags who are like that, and let’s be honest there are so many characters that share the same trope, she’s pretty generic. So there. I think Amy is an unremarkable, forgettable character. And honestly, I couldn't care less about everything that happened in Oz.

I didn’t even care about the romance which I felt was rushed and contrived. I was even more interested in Amy's life back in Kansas. Whatever happened to the pregnant girl and the boyfriend though? I am genuinely curious. In fact, the most interesting part of the book, in my opinion, was the first chapter, but I admit to liking the idea of how to defeat Dorothy & company. Thought it was actually quite brilliant.

With all that said, I wouldn’t be reading the next books but since I already have the first collection of novellas, I might as well. If it happens to be a good read, I’ll definitely consider reading the succeeding books because despite not liking the book that much, I’m still curious as to how Amy et al will be able to defeat Dorothy and her gang.

Rating: 2/5 Fairy Wings
