♫ ♫ SWEET THING by Renee Carlino ♫ ♫ : A Midnight Fairy Book Review

Synopsis:

"You have to teach your heart and mind how to sing together…then you'll hear the sound of your soul."

Mia Kelly thinks she has it all figured out. She's an Ivy League graduate, a classically trained pianist, and the beloved daughter of a sensible mother and offbeat father. Yet Mia has been stalling since graduation, torn between putting her business degree to use and exploring music, her true love.

When her father unexpectedly dies, she decides to pick up the threads of his life while she figures out her own. Uprooting herself from Ann Arbor to New York City, Mia takes over her father's café, a treasured neighborhood institution that plays host to undiscovered musicians and artists. She's denied herself the thrilling and unpredictable life of a musician, but a chance encounter with Will, a sweet, gorgeous, and charming guitarist, offers her a glimpse of what could be. When Will becomes her friend and then her roommate, she does everything in her power to suppress her passions-for him, for music-but her father's legacy slowly opens her heart to the possibility of something more.

A "heartbreaking and romantic" (Aestas Book Blog) debut, Sweet Thing explores the intensity and complexities of first love and self-discovery.

♫ The Meet-Cute:

Mia is a 25-year old Ivy-League graduate and is on her way to New York to take care of stuff her late father had left her. Her father died just a month ago and Mia is still in mourning. When she boarded her plane, a musician guy sat next to her looking adorably nervous. The guy is scared to fly. She then decided to help the guy out to calm his nerves. Mia, being a musician herself was able to distract the guy and encouraged him to talk about music. Due to their mutual love of music, the two hit it off. As their trip started to end the two exchanged names and addresses and agreed to meet sometime later to "jam together". The two met again a month later.

♫ The Characters:

Mia Kelly is a very passionate musician with a very intelligent mind. She graduated with a business major from Brown and is still looking for opportunities to use her talent and degree. However, when her father died, she finds herself on the way to New York to keep her father's cafe open. She plays the piano, and many other instruments. Her love for music is something she inherited from her father. Mia's character is what you can call "precautious". She likes to plan ahead and follow it through. When it comes to relationships, she wants to be with someone who is stable and has an ambition in life. I could totally relate to this girl, I understand her fears and her reasons to push people away. I couldn't judge her when she pushed Will away, because the girl really thought she was doing the right thing. Anyway, I liked how Mia's character developed in this book-- the way she learned through her experiences and changed her ways.

Will Ryan is a 29-year old musician. He plays the guitar for a band and living in a storage closet in Chinatown. Will came from a huge family that's why he wasn't able  to attend college. Will projects a "starving artist" look that's why Mia is wary of him. He's extremely talented and could play any kind of instrument. I really liked Will's character because he's so sweet, funny and kind. He respected Mia's decision for them to be strictly friends yet remained thoughtful and caring towards Mia. I also admire his dedication and love for music.

♫ The Story:

This is a story about two people who are extremely attracted to each other but were chained by their fears that's why they wouldn't allow themselves give in to their feelings. I totally get Mia. I sometimes hated her for the decisions she made but I couldn't judge her for doing so. I think there's nothing wrong to be "precautious". I think her logic when it comes to relationship is perfectly fine. Who doesn't want to be in a relationship with someone who has a stable job and a promising future right? However, I think it's also fine to give in to your feelings once in a while, specially if the feeling is that strong. The attraction between Mia and Will is palpable, even the people around them couldn't deny it. Will on the other hand is so patient and sweet. Just the right guy for a strong headed woman like Mia. I really enjoyed Sweet Thing. I loved Mia and Will's story, I highly recommend it to NA romance novel readers.

♫ The Writing:

I loved it! Ms. Carlino's writing  has a lyrical feel in it which I think is perfect for the story. Mia and Will's story is realistic and full of life lessons. The prologue sort of threw me off though, I really thought Lauren was the heroine! LOL. Seriously, I really liked Ms. Carlino's writing and I'm looking forward to read her next book!

♫ Rating: 4.5 Fairy Wings!

♫ Sweet Little Thing (Sweet Thing 1.5):

Synopsis:

Ever wonder what happened after the final pages of Sweet Thing?

From his candid and sometimes neurotic point of view, Will tells all in this musical and sexy follow-up novella to Renée Carlino’s USA Today Bestseller.

Life is pure bliss for Mia and Will. They have a puppy, a loft in Brooklyn, and a new music studio on the rise. It seems things couldn’t get any better for this talented couple when life decides to throw them a sweet little curve ball.

They quickly learn that things don't always go according to plan. Sometimes happily ever after is one giant leap of faith away.

With the help of good music, good friends, and one eccentric old lady, they overcome a few of life’s little bumps to find the sweetest thing of all.

Watch this duo grow in more ways than one in SWEET Little THING.

Okay, I've read this book as soon as I finished Sweet Thing and I think it was a nice addition to Mia and Will's story. It's not as emotional as the first one because they are already together in this book but I really loved it. I'm glad that we saw the beginning of Mia and Will's "happy ever after". It was such a fun read. If you haven't read the book yet, you can purchase it here.

♫ About the Author:

Renee’s first friends were the imaginary kind and even though her characters haven’t gone away, thankfully the delusions have. She admits she’s a wildly hopeless romantic and she blames 80’s movies staring Molly Ringwald for that. She lives in Southern California with her husband, two sons, and their sweet dog June. When she’s not at the beach with her boys or working on the next book, she likes to spend her time reading, going to concerts, and eating dark chocolate.
